Jewelry Design Course

It takes precision, perseverance, patience, skill and creativity to create a piece of fine jewelry. At IGI, the Professional Jewelry Design Program instills just that and much more. With a complete array of learning modules, this IGI program provides ample exposure to various gemstones, precious metals and diamonds, enabling one to create stunning yet practical jewelry designs.

The Program has been designed with the needs and standards of both Indian and international jewelry industries. The duration of the Program is four months and it provides professionals, jewelers, aspiring jewelry designers and gem enthusiasts a launch pad for a career in design and jewelry production.

Comprehensively packaged, the Program consists of four modules and encompasses detailed learning of the illustrations of the various components of jewelry; the principles, elements and inspirations of design; fundamentals of precious metals; manufacturing techniques, estimation, pricing, merchandising and market trends, coupled with practical examples.

Every student receives a fully equipped design kit and complete lab manual. The Program also includes practical sessions on jewelry manufacturing where one can actually observe and learn the process of creating and structuring the design - taking it from imagination to creation.

Module I - Illustrative Methodology
This module deals with the illustration of the various components of jewelry such as gemstones (faceted and non-faceted, precious, semi-precious gemstones and diamonds of all shapes and sizes), precious metals, jewelry settings, links and joints, clasps and fittings. The various media used for illustrations include pencil, color pencil, watercolor and felt marker.

Module II – Design Fundamentals
This module deals with creativity aspects such as inspirations for design, motif study and free hand drawing. The creativity is channeled using the principles and elements of design. This is followed by the designing of the various forms of jewelry (earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, etc. and includes men’s jewelry) based on traditional, western and many other styles. Custom made jewelry is dealt with in detail, thus refining the student’s creativity and design skills.

Module III - Fundamentals of Metals, Manufacturing Techniques and Marketing of Jewelry
In this module the student is made familiar with the precious metals and their alloys that are used for manufacturing of jewelry. The course includes mass manufacturing and handcrafted jewelry, with special emphasis on handcrafted jewelry. In this course:

• An actual jeweler’s workbench is set up in the classroom.
• A detailed introduction to the various tools used in jewelry crafting is given.
• A trained craftsman will demonstrate the various stages in the manufacturing of jewelry and students will actually see a design on paper being transformed into a piece of jewelry.
• Pricing of diamonds and gemstones is covered in detail, along with jewelry piece pricing.
• Students are introduced the various global jewelry markets and jewelry trend forecasting.

The course draws to a close with topics like hallmarking, certification and cleaning and care of jewelry.

Module IV - Jewelry Design Project
The students are to complete a project in jewelry design, where they will give a complete report on the inspiration behind the design.

Upon successful completion of all modules, students are awarded an IGI Diploma in ‘Professional Jewelry Design’ issued from the IGI Headquarters in Antwerp, Belgium, thus giving it a worldwide recognition.
